Tracks: Management & Strategy

So many projects, so little time. Regardless of the industry, many curriculum development teams balance the need for rapidly developed content and reduced time to proficiency with requests for engaging innovative content offerings. Measuring and prioritizing projects can be difficult but project management techniques can help designers and developers create workflows that incorporate size, scope, and content complexity and allow more agility in the content development process.

Whether you are managing a large team of designers and developers or simply trying to balance your workload, this session will provide you with strategies for increased speed, flexibility, and collaboration within the process of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This session will discuss the values of Agile and draw connections to content development methodologies like ADDIE. First, you will explore project management techniques such as the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Gantt charts, and Agile methods including SCRUM and Kanban. You will then learn to incorporate these strategies using spreadsheets and other open-source and accessible tools to streamline processes and scope development projects. You will also learn some simple calculations to generate data around project deadlines and deliverables that enhance communication with all stakeholders and support data-driven decision-making. You will leave this session feeling ready to incorporate project management strategies that allow your team to spend more time doing what they enjoy most about the job—developing engaging and innovative content.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Project management techniques
  • How to generate meaningful data to support content development and evaluation
  • How Agile methodologies can support  content development without detracting from other methods
  • How to scope projects and create timelines
  • How to create a culture of collaboration in content development

Technology discussed:

Excel/spreadsheets, Office products (timeline, project, etc.), Gantt chart generator (open source)
