705: From Passive to Playable: Designing Interactive Video That Teaches

November 6, 2026 8:30 am - 9:30 am

Video is one of the most common training formats, but it is also one of the most passive. Even high-production videos often become “watch and forget” experiences because learners have little agency beyond play, pause, and scrub. When video stays linear, learners may understand what they saw, but they don’t reliably build judgment, perception, or performance.

In this session, you’ll learn how to turn video into an active learning experience by giving learners meaningful control, not only over the path of the narrative but also over what they see and how they explore the content. You’ll learn design patterns for interactive video, including choice points that trigger consequence-and-feedback loops, contextual overlays that turn viewing into practice, and multiangle or multifocus viewing that lets learners direct attention to the most instructionally relevant details. You’ll also learn how “playable video” supports complex topics by enabling guided exploration, allowing learners to compare different approaches or viewpoints, revisit key moments, and go deeper where they need clarity. You will leave with a repeatable framework for identifying the moments in a video that deserve learner control, selecting the right interaction type (overlays, camera/focus control, or branching), and planning interactive video that teaches without exploding scope.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to convert passive training video into active learning that builds judgment and performance
  • A repeatable framework for choosing the right interaction type: overlays, viewpoint/focus control, or branching
  • How to design decision moments with consequence-and-feedback so learners practice instead of just watch
  • Guardrails that prevent scope creep so interactive video stays sustainable for small teams

This session is designed for learning professionals who currently use video (or want to) and want practical ways to make it more interactive and instructionally effective. No specialized tools are required.
