114: Is Your Microlearning Maximizing Its Potential? Find Out with 7 Principles

November 4, 2026 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Microlearning is not simply a shorter version of a longer learning experience; effective microlearning relies on different design principles. When these principles are in place, the difference is visible. When they're missing, so is the impact.

This session introduces seven design principles built for microlearning, grounded in cognitive load theory. Cognitive load theory explains what's happening in working memory during short learning experiences and why certain design decisions either support or compete with the outcome. Understanding this science changes how designers see their own work.

In this session, you will work through examples, building the ability to see what's driving effectiveness and where there's room to strengthen a design. The principles cover both how information is processed—including tool capacity, concision, and media choices—and how the learning experience is structured, including context, action, and avoiding overuse. Together they offer a practical lens that sharpens design decisions at every stage. No prior experience with cognitive load theory or microlearning design principles is needed. Bringing current content, whether long-form or microlearning, is not required but can enhance your experience.

In this session, you will learn:

  • An approach to discerning the seven principles across your current content, whether already created, in development, or coming across the desk for feedback
  • How design decisions affect the way learners process content
  • Principles to improve the structure of your learning content

This session is designed for anyone who creates or reviews microlearning, regardless of experience level. You should be aware of microlearning as a concept and have some familiarity with general instructional design practices. No specific tools or technologies are required.
