706: Leveraging Limitations: Lessons Learned from Corrections & Higher Ed

November 6, 2026 8:30 am - 9:30 am

Too often, the “best” design solution is one that assumes you have access to unlimited time, budget, staffing, and technology. These conditions do not exist; we all work within constraints. Yet some of the strongest learning experiences emerge not in spite of constraints, but because of them.

This session draws from design experience in two very different contexts: traditional higher education and correctional education. Both operate under significant limitations, including restricted technology, policy constraints, compliance requirements, uneven learner access, and institutional complexity. However, we found that by framing these limitations as potential strengths, we were able to achieve more creative solutions in our design work than we otherwise would have. We will share a practical constraint-based design framework that helps teams distinguish between artificial limitations and productive constraints. You will see how limitations can strengthen alignment, improve cognitive load management, clarify assessment, and reduce unnecessary complexity. We'll look at real examples and cases from our work in correctional institutions and higher education, where working inside tight boundaries led to stronger outcomes, more inclusive designs, and more sustainable models than the fully-resourced version probably would have.

In this session, you will learn to:

  • Identify common institutional and environmental constraints that impact learning design
  • Apply a constraint-based design framework to improve clarity, rigor, and accessibility
  • Distinguish between artificial limitations and productive constraints
  • Reframe constraints as design inputs rather than design obstacles, and advocate for their value within their own teams and institutions
  • Practice designing a provided learning experience by deliberately leveraging a constraint to increase focus, rigor, or sustainability

All designers face design constraints, and our approach suits designers of any level.
