EXPOC104: The Broken Career Ladder: What Happens When AI Eliminates the Work We Used to Learn From?
As AI automates entry-level work, it removes the way new people have learned the business, gained expertise and developed judgment. So where will the next generation of experts and leaders come from? We’ll explore L&D solutions to develop expertise needed by future leaders.
During this session, you will learn:
- Identify where AI is creating “missing rungs” in their organization’s career ladder by recognizing entry-level tasks that also function as critical learning experiences.
- Distinguish between work that can safely be automated and work that needs to be replaced with an intentional learning experience because it develops judgment, context, relationships, or expertise.
- Apply practical approaches for rebuilding those missing experiences, including deliberate practice, progressive responsibility, apprenticeship/coaching, AI-supported stretch assignments, and structured learning programs.
- Reframe L&D’s role from delivering training to designing experience pathways that deliberately build the expertise future managers, specialists, and leaders will need.
- Leave with a simple diagnostic they can apply back at work to evaluate whether AI adoption is unintentionally weakening their organization’s future talent pipeline.
