204: Clean Up Your LMMess Using Learning Governance

November 4, 2026 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

An LMS can become a dumping ground for anything that needs to be tracked. Subject matter experts (SMEs) want specific content for their audience, even when similar content already exists. They might go hands-off once the content is launched, and fail to provide a communication plan. This quickly creates an LMMess!

This session explores how creating, implementing, and getting buy-in for LMS governance can ensure that you have content that is defined at the right level, up-to-date and relevant, can easily be found by your learners, and will be assigned to the appropriate audience with clear communications.

I will share the Brandon Hall award-winning governance model that we put in place at a large healthcare system, as an example of how learning governance and specifically LMS governance contributes to a successful learning experience. Along the way, we will discuss the essentil components of any learning governance model and how each organization's model may look different based on their needs. We will discuss the challenges your organizations face; ultimately, you will leave with a set of clear objectives for starting to build your own governance model for your organization.

In this session, you will learn to:

  • Describe the benefits of having LMS governance in place for your team and your learners
  • Explain the important components to consider when building LMS governance
  • Build a plan for creating LMS governance for your organization
  • Get organizational buy in for your LMS governance

Attendees will need to be aware of what learning governance is, but they do not need extensive experience with implementing governance. The session is intended for those who are starting to think about creating their own governance model.
