207: What Comic Book Design Principles Can Teach Us About Impactful Instruction

November 4, 2026 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Sequential art is a sophisticated visual language capable of simplifying complex processes or technical concepts. Discover how to use visual iconography, semantic density, and strategic panel flow to hold attention and boost learner performance.

Grounded in Dual Coding Theory, this session reveals how comic book architecture effectively manages cognitive load and enhances long-term knowledge retention. We will translate the five critical choices of comic creation—Moment, Frame, Image, Word, and Flow—into actionable strategies for curriculum development and lesson sequencing. Mastering strategic prompting techniques that maintain character continuity and visual logic will ensure that your AI-generated sequences serve the instructional flow rather than distracting from it.

You’ll see actionable examples of how comic storytelling principles can translate to the creation of engaging interactive content targeted to any topic, explore the role of the "gutter" as a primary engine of active learning, and study how corporate trainers use scenario-based comics to make compliance training engaging and "sticky."

In this session, you will learn to:

  • Apply the McCloudian Framework—five critical sequential art choices for effective instructional design
  • Utilize the “gutter" blank space concept to trigger active learning
  • Optimize “dual-coding” to reduce cognitive noise
  • Apply strategic AI prompting techniques to maintain narrative continuity

This session is built upon foundational instructional design best practices and does not require advanced knowledge of adult learning theory or any specific authoring or design tool. Artistic ability is also not required.
