609: Increase Engagement Through Cinematic Storytelling in Adult Learning
Why can we effortlessly track complex storylines across seasons of a show, yet struggle to remember a five-minute slide presentation? The problem isn’t attention span. It’s design. Too much corporate learning is structured for information delivery, not human engagement. Without narrative, emotion, or visual immersion, even important content becomes forgettable.
This session challenges learning professionals to think in cinematic scope. Instead of designing slides, you’ll learn to design experiences. Drawing from real-world implementation inside a global organization, this session demonstrates how cinematic storytelling, narrative arcs, visual world-building, and strategic use of modern AI tools can transform training into something learners genuinely want to engage with. Through live examples, behind-the-scenes breakdowns, and guided audience participation, you’ll analyze how story structure drives retention, how to ethically borrow and adapt familiar narrative tropes, and how to create learning experiences that feel less like instruction and more like conversation.
In this session, you will learn to:
- Think beyond traditional learning formats and design bold, story-driven experiences that increase engagement and retention
- Apply cinematic storytelling elements—such as character, conflict, and resolution—to real-world learning programs
- Ethically draw from popular narrative tropes and use modern AI tools to build immersive learning experiences efficiently and creatively
This session is designed for learning professionals who are familiar with basic instructional design principles and may have experimented with storytelling, multimedia, or AI tools at an introductory level. Attendees do not need advanced technical production skills, filmmaking experience, or deep AI expertise.
