408 Don’t Just Give Me All the Data: Align KPIs with xAPI

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM PT
Thursday, October 26

Tracks: Data & Measurement

Many development efforts often start with only a basic understanding of xAPI and rush into implementing it without thinking about how the data will be evaluated later on. Basic xAPI support is provided by many authoring tools and its potential often excites us, but the default data is not often useful. What if there were a sensible way (and handy resource) to align xAPI data with a starter list of KPIs and reporting goals?

In this session you’ll learn how to identify simple measures that will directly support your evaluation, reporting, and analytics goals. You’ll explore how you can leverage existing frameworks such as the Kirkpatrick Model to lay the foundation for your evaluation strategy. You’ll also gain understanding of how to easily identify the reasons for measuring so it can drive the associated reporting requirements and analytics. Next, you’ll explore the types of measures that can be used for efficiency/utilization metrics, learning effectiveness, and business impact. You’ll connect the dots by seeing real-world examples of how align reporting goals and measures with specific xAPI data collection requirements. Finally, you’ll then see how those translate into useful visualizations and dashboards by seeing really insightful charts, graphs, and dashboards of the data. You’ll leave this session with new insights on how to make an impact on your business or mission objectives by more strategically planning and implementing xAPI with this approach.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Why adopting an evaluation strategy is critical part of implementing xAPI
  • Why the quality of the xAPI data collected is more important than quantity
  • How to help your organization clearly establish specific reporting requirements
  • How to understand the differences between the types of measures used to support your reporting requirements
  • How to align the reporting goals and measures with xAPI data collection requirements and xAPI profiles
