810 Navigating Common Learning Standards: How to Stay Out of Trouble

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM PT

Tracks: Instructional Design

For years SCORM has been the de facto learning standard, but emerging specifications xAPI and cmi5 can fill the data and extensibility gaps SCORM is known for. With multiple choices, how do you know which learning standard is the best for your content?

In this session we’ll focus on the pros and cons of SCORM, xAPI, and cmi5 so you can make an informed choice for your content, next RFP, or product evaluation. We will share our expertise on considerations for the delivery format, reporting requirements, and system compatibility. You will leave with a better understanding of the standards and how to choose the one that fits your needs.

We will answer common questions like:

  • What do the standards report on and how does this work with compliance concerns?
  • How does each standard handle launching in an LMS?
  • What is the state of adoption for each one?

In this session, you will learn:

  • What SCORM, xAPI, and cmi5 are, as well as the similarities and differences between the three standards
  • Which standard is right for your content so that your learners will have the best experience
  • About the importance of standards in terms of reporting and interoperability
  • Why learning standards are important for learning and training content, data reporting, and interoperability between systems

Technology discussed:

Learning standards (SCORM, xAPI, cmi5), learning management systems, learning record stores
